The 1888 Eruption of Bandai-san and Colored Lakes
Access
The northern area of Bandai-san is called Urabandai or
Urabandai-kogen.
At the JR Inawashiro [猪苗代] station on the Ban-etsu-saisen line, take a bus
for Kitakata [喜多方]/ Hibara [桧原]/ Bandai Hibara Kohan Hotel [磐梯桧原湖畔ホテル]
and get off at the Goshikinuma Iriguchi [五色沼入口] bus stop. At the JR
Kitakata station on the Ban-etsu-saisen line, take a bus for Inawashiro-eki
[猪苗代駅]/ Urabandai Royal Hotel [裏磐梯ロイヤルホテル] and get off at the
Goshikinuma Iriguchi bus stop.

There is a visitor information center near the Goshikinuma Iriguchi bus
stop. Maps of the Bandai-san area, including an English map, are
available at the center.
To Aka-numa in the crater
From the Urabandai Kogen Hotel [裏磐梯高原ホテル] bus stop, walk on the main road 200 meters or so in the direction opposite to Goshikinuma and turn left for the Urabandai ski area [裏磐梯スキー場]. You can get to Aka-numa via the ski area. The way to Aka-numa extends to the summit of Bandai-san.
